A fine piece of leather goods stays with a man for years, often far longer than a garment. The trick is choosing it well. Here are our guidelines for recognising quality leather, building a coherent leather goods wardrobe and looking after it.
What are leather goods?
Leather goods are the making and trade of leather articles other than shoes and clothing: bags, luggage, belts, wallets and cases. For a man, they cover the travel bag as well as the belt worn every day, and are distinct from small leather goods, which covers pocket items.
Where does the word "maroquinerie" come from?
The French word comes from "maroquin", a goat leather tanned and dyed in the Moroccan manner, much prized in Europe for its fineness, notably in bookbinding. The craftsmen who worked it became the "maroquiniers", and their trade ended up denoting all the leather objects one carries.
Leather, suede and canvas
Smooth leather is the most robust and develops a patina over time. Suede, or velvet calf, brings suppleness and a warm texture. Canvas, lighter, is combined with leather on areas exposed to wear, such as handles and reinforcements. Our travel bags come in all three materials.
Which leather goods for a man?
A man's leather goods wardrobe rests on a few essential pieces: a bag for travelling, one or two belts matching your shoes, a light bag for everyday and, for the home, slippers worthy of the name.
| Item | Materials | Strong points | Use | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travel bag | Brown leather and blue or brown suede | Cabin size, shoe compartment, under 2 kg | Weekends, business trips | €419 |
| Travel bag | Brown leather and beige canvas | Cabin size, adjustable shoulder strap | Getaways, sunny days | €369 |
| Belt | Smooth leather or suede | Solid brass buckle, shades of our shoes | Office, ceremony, weekend | €99 |
| Charles slippers | Suede or Italian leather, leather lining | Non-slip sole, matching leather case | Home, travel | €159 |
| Tote bag | Premium cotton | Magnetic closure, inner pocket | Everyday, shopping, office | €29 |
For travelling
The 48-hour leather travel bag is the centrepiece. Its blue lining, its two large zipped inside pockets and its five metal studs, which protect the base when you put it down, make it a bag as practical as it is elegant. It can be carried by hand or over the shoulder, thanks to its handles or its shoulder strap.
For every day
The belt is the most worn piece of leather goods. We suggest starting with a black belt and a brown one, to cover most shoes. The blue cotton tote bag, with its ecru handles and magnetic closure, goes along on everyday journeys.
For the home
Our Charles men's slippers extend elegance into the living room. Their thick non-slip sole cushions each step on smooth floors, and their leather case lets you take them travelling.
How to recognise quality leather goods?
Quality leather goods can be recognised by four details: the material, the stitching, the metal parts and the interior. Take the time to examine them before buying.
- Choose from among the different types of leather a full-grain or dense suede, supple to the touch, with no plastic look.
- Regular, tight stitching, with no thread sticking out at points of tension.
- Solid metal parts, buckles and studs, that do not chip.
- A neat lining and well-thought-out pockets, the sign of an object designed to be used.
At In Corio, we bring to leather goods the same standards as our shoes, made in family workshops in the Porto region with leathers from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group. Selling without intermediaries lets us offer these pieces at a fair price.
How to care for leather goods?
Leather goods are looked after with a few simple steps: protect them from heat, dust them and nourish them from time to time.
- Store your bags stuffed with paper, away from direct light and heat.
- Dust smooth leather with a soft cloth, then nourish it with a colourless nourishing cream, after testing on a discreet area.
- Brush suede dry to raise the nap, with no water or cream.
- Let a wet bag dry at room temperature, never near a radiator.

Frequently asked questions about men's leather goods
Which leather goods piece should you give a man?
The leather belt is the safest gift: it is used every day and is easily chosen in black or brown. For a more memorable gift, a travel bag will accompany weekends for years, and leather slippers with their case are sure to please.
What is the difference between leather goods and small leather goods?
Leather goods covers all leather articles: bags, luggage, belts and cases. Small leather goods is the part devoted to pocket items, such as wallets, card holders and key rings.
Is a leather travel bag heavy?
Not necessarily. A well-designed bag combines supple leather with reinforcements placed in the right spots. Our travel bags weigh under 2 kg when empty, while meeting the 24 x 26 x 52 cm cabin size.
In summary
Well-chosen men's leather goods come down to a few pieces: a travel bag for getaways, belts matched to your shoes, a light bag for everyday and slippers for the home. Quality leather, solid stitching and regular care make them last for years. Discover our pieces above.
