Suede often worries people: fear of rain, of stains, of complicated care. Well chosen and well looked after, it can nonetheless be worn from September to May. Here is what we know about this material, and how to enjoy it for a long time.
What is suede?
The suede of a shoe is today calf leather worked on the flesh side, sanded to obtain a fine and even nap; it is also called velour calf leather. The word therefore describes the look of the hide rather than the animal. It is the softest material in our men's boots and ankle boots.
From Swedish gloves to suede
The English word suede comes from French: "gants de Suède" was the name given to the very soft reversed-skin gloves imported from that country. The word crossed the Channel, and the material, at first reserved for gloves, moved on to shoes and then ankle boots.
Suede, nubuck, velour calf leather: what are the differences?
Suede and velour calf leather are worked on the flesh side, which gives a longer, softer nap. Nubuck differs from suede: sanded on the grain side, at the surface, it gives a shorter, tighter nap. Our suede ankle boots use calf hides, Italian for Gabin, Martin and Henry.
Suede or smooth leather ankle boots: which should you choose?
Suede is softer, warmer and more casual; smooth leather is more formal and easier to polish. For everyday use, outside a dark suit, suede is often the most pleasant choice.
Suede and rain
Contrary to popular belief, suede withstands a shower. The Italian suede of Gabin and Henry is water-repellent: water beads on the surface instead of soaking in. After a damp day, simply leave the boot to dry in the open air, then brush it. For days of heavy rain, a grained leather boot remains more suitable.
Suede and cold
Suede breathes and keeps the foot warm: it suits autumn and winter as well as the first days of spring.
| Model | Type | Suede | Sole | To wear with | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gabin | Chukka | Brown Italian suede, water-repellent | Stitched rubber | Flannel suit, chinos, jeans | €339 |
| Henry | Chelsea | Brown Italian velour calf leather, water-repellent | Stitched rubber | Jeans, chinos, weekend outfits | €349 |
| Martin | Combat boot | Soft camel suede | Stitched rubber | Jeans, ecru chinos, knitwear | €369 |
How to wear suede ankle boots?
Suede ankle boots are worn with textured fabrics that echo their nap: wool, flannel, corduroy, raw denim.
At the office
Among the models of men's boots, a brown suede chukka goes with a grey flannel suit or wool trousers, with a tweed jacket. The outfit remains smart, with a more relaxed note than a smooth leather shoe.
At the weekend
With raw denim jeans and a knit jumper, the Henry Chelsea in brown suede is the most natural pairing. The camel of Martin brightens up jeans or ecru chinos.
How to care for suede ankle boots?
Suede is cared for dry: regular brushing raises the nap and removes dust, a renovator revives the colour. No cream or polish, which would clog the fibres.
The care ritual
- Leave your boots to dry in the open air after a damp day, away from the radiator.
- Brush them with a brass suede brush: light pressure raises the nap, firmer pressure removes marks.
- Revive the colour from time to time with a suede renovator.
- Slip cedar shoe trees into your boots between wears to keep their shape.
In case of a stain
Act quickly, without water or hard rubbing: targeted brushing is enough for most dry marks. Our article how to clean suede and nubuck shoes details the steps to follow depending on the type of stain.
Which size should you choose for suede ankle boots?
Take your usual size: suede relaxes slightly with wear, but the shape of the boot stays the same.
In Corio comfort
In Corio combines an ergonomic last, identical across all its models, a Blake stitched construction that softens the sole and a high-density latex foam under the leather insole. With the natural softness of suede, this gives an ankle boot that is comfortable from day one, made in the family-run workshops of Porto.

Frequently asked questions about men's suede ankle boots
Which suede ankle boots are the most comfortable?
Those that combine soft suede, a last suited to the shape of the foot and cushioning underfoot. Suede does not need breaking in: a well-made ankle boot is comfortable from the first outing.
How to recognise a quality suede ankle boot?
Quality suede has a fine, even and dense nap that stands back up when brushed. A stitched sole, and therefore repairable, and a leather insole are other signs of an ankle boot made to last.
Can you wear suede ankle boots in the rain?
Yes, for a shower, especially with water-repellent suede. Then leave the boot to dry in the open air, away from a heat source, and brush it. In heavy rain, grained leather is preferable.
In summary
Suede is a velvety calf leather, soft from the first day and more resistant than you might think. The Gabin chukka and the Henry Chelsea, in water-repellent Italian suede, and the Martin combat boot in camel suede can be worn from autumn to spring. Regular brushing and a renovator are all it takes to care for them.
